Amusan, Akintola to start 2023 outdoor season at Tiger Track Classic
Reigning World 100m hurdles champion, Tobi Amusan and 2021 National Sports Festival 200m king, Alaba Akintola will begin their 2023 outdoor season at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic this weekend.
Also lined up to make their outdoor debut are 400m barrier runners, Abasiono Akpan and Joy Abu.
Amusan is returning to the track after a stellar 2022 season, winning all the available competitions and Games she competed in. The 25 year old successfully defended her African Championsips, Commonwealth Games and Diamond League titles and added the World title as the icing on the cake.
She also set a new 12.12 World record and ended the year as one of the five best women athletes in the world.
Amusan will not however be opening her season with the high hurdles, instead the petite athlete will be competing in the 100 and 200m events.
She will start Friday night with the 200m event and return on Saturday to run in the 100m event.
Akintola is also returning to the track exactly a week after competing in the 60 and 200m events at the NCAA Indoor championships in Albuqureque, New Mexico.
The 21 year old will be competing in the 100m event with the sole aim of breaking 10 seconds this season. He came close last season, stopping the clock at 10.04.
The duo of Akpan and Abu will also be in action for their respective schools and both will be running in the 400m hurdles.
