Amusan Battles Alcaraz, Rybakina , Three Others For 2023 Laureus World Breakthrough Of The Year Award
Nigeria’s Tobiloba Amusan tops the list of six nominees that will battle for the 2023 Laureus World Breakthrough Of The Year Award.
The 25 year old made history at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA last year when she became the first Nigerian athlete to win a World outdoor title after scorching to a wind-aided 12.06 to win the 100m hurdles title.
Amusan who is also the Commonwealth and African champion in the event ran an incredible 12.12 seconds in the semifinal to set a new lifetime best and World record enroute to her winning the gold in the final.
The Nigerian who ended 2022 as the top ranked high hurdler in the world will battle among five others new Tennis sensation, Carlos Alcaraz who won his debut Grand Slam title in New York (US Open) to take World No.1 spot he has since lost early 2023 to Novak Djokovic
She will also battle Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina who won the Wimbledon from No.17 seed. It was her first Grand Slam title; USA’s Nathan Chen who won Olympic gold with a world record in the short program.
Another American, Scottie Scheffler , winner at Augusta and joint second at the US Open as well as Morocco Men’s Football Team, first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup are also in contention.
