Amusan battles Fraser-Pryce, McLaughlin, five others for Athletics Weekly readers’ choice awards 2022
Nigeria, African, Commonwealth and World 100m hurdles champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan tops the list of eight women nominees for the Athletics Weekly readers’ choice awards 2022.
Amusan, 25, will battle Jamaican duo of world 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and 200m champion Shericka Jackson, Kenya’s world 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon and Ukraine’s world indoor high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh for the award.
Others are Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo, the 400m world champion, USA’s world 400m hurdles champion and record holder, Sydney Sydney McLaughlin and Venezuela’s world indoor and outdoor triple jump champion and world record holder in the event (indoors), Yulimar Rojas.
According to the magazine, Amusan was nominated after she stunned the world and herself by breaking the women’s 100m hurdles world record with 12.12 at the semi-final stage in Oregon before going on to take her first global gold with a wind-assisted 12.06 in the final.
She also landed the Commonwealth title with a Games record of 12.29, as well as winning the Diamond League trophy.
Interestingly, Amusan is up against the same set of athletes she is battling with for the World Athletics Women’s athlete of the year 2022.
Voting closes for the Athletics Weekly award on November 17 with the winners announced in the December edition of the highly authoritative magazine devoted to the sport of athletics.
