Amusan out of World Indoor Championships, misses chance to make history
Ese Brume aiming to upgrade to gold after silver medal win two years ago
Reigning World Outdoor record holder, Tobi Amusan has passed on the opportunity to make history as the first Nigerian nay African woman to win the World Indoor and Outdoor title after she was not listed in Nigeria’s final entry for the World Indoor Championships which start this weekend in Glasgow, Scotland.
Amusan had raised expectations of becoming the third Nigerian woman after Glory Alozie and Ese Brume to win at World Athletics’ flagship events indoors and out after running two African records within days in the 60m hurdles this indoor season.
She also raised hopes of finally having a first Nigerian female champion indoors after the men through Sunday Bada and Olusoji Fasuba picked the 400m and 60m titles in 1997 and 2008 respectively.
In Amusan’s absence, all focus will now be on Brume who will be seeking to move a step higher to gold after becoming the first Nigerian long jumper to win medals at World Indoor and outdoor championships.
Brume is the lone woman on the list while the tri of Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the Shot Put, Edosie Ibadin in the 800m and Dubem Nwachukwu in the 400m were confirmed to compete in Glasgow.
Nigeria will also be presenting a 4x400m team made up of Sikiru Adewale Adeyemi, Chidi Okezie, Nwachukwu and Ibadin.
The Nigerian relay team will compete against those of USA, Poland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Slovak Republic and Kenya.
