Anumba closes on Onyekwere in Discuss Throw ranking
Amusan still number one ranked sprint hurdler, Brume third in long jump
Reigning National Sports Festival Discus Throw champion, Ashley Anumba has moved from 25 last week to 17 in the latest
Discuss throw ranking World Athletics.
The 24 year old has improved her total points haul from the 1118 she got last week to 1149 this week and she is just 10
points behind Africa and Commonwealth Games champion, Chioma Onyekwere who is ranked the 16th best in the world (1159
points).
Anumba’s rise from her 73rd ranking (1018 points) at the start of the year to 17th this week has been due to her incredible
performances in the outdoor circuit, so far.
She ended 2022 with a 59.06m lifetime best to claim the National Sports Festival gold ahead of Onyekwere and started 2023
with another 59.37m lifetime best performance at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina in March.
Since then, Anumba has improved her lifetime best three more times with the 61.56m she threw last week the best of the lot.
She has also thrown above 60m four times this year and holds a 2-1 head to head lead over Onyekwere this year and 3-2 since
2019 when they first both clashed at the African Games in Rabat.
In the other rankings, Tobi Amusan is still the top ranked high hurdler in 2023 while Ese Brume is still third in the long
jump behing reigning World and Olympic champion, Malaika Mihambo of Germany and reigning World Indoor champion, Ivana
Vuleta of Serbia.
Ruth Usoro is ranked the 20th best in the event. She is also 20th and top ranked Nigerian in the triple jump.
Rosemary Chukwuma is the top ranked Nigerian in the 100m (39), Favour Ofili (14) in the 200m, Patience Okon George (89) in
the 400m, Ashley Anumba (227) in the Shot Put and Temitope Simbiat Adeshina (88) in the high jump.
