Arsenal will confirm UEFA Champions League return with win over Southampton

Arsenal will confirm their return to the UEFA Champions League if they beat relegation haunted Southampton Friday at the
Emirates stadium.

The Gunners, chasing their first Premier League title in 19 years last played in the world’s most lucrative club
competition six years ago.

Mikel Arteta’s men are top of the log with 74 points from 31 games, four ahead of Manchester City in second place who have played a game less.

A win for Arsenal on Friday will take their points haul to 77, out of reach for Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, two clubs outside the qualifying zone but who can mathematically catch the Gunners.

Tottenham have played 31 matches and are on 53 points. The Gunners’ north London neighbour have seven games left to play and if they win all, they win end up with 74 points.

Brighton are on 49 points but have played two games less. This means the Seagulls have 27 points to play four. If the 27 points are added to the 49 they currently have, they will end the season on 76 points.

With a win therefore at the Emirates on Friday, the worst position Arsenal can place on the log will be fourth if they lose their remaining six games after the tie against Southampton.
