Aston Villa move for Paul Onuachu ahead of January transfer window

Genk ready to sell Nigerian for €25m

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Genk’s top scorer Paul Onuachu and could move for the Nigeria international during the January transfer window, according to Voetbalkrant.

Onuachu has been linked with a move away from the Belgian Jupiler league outfit since last season but no concrete offer came.

The 28 year old has been in great, goalscoring form this term after recovering from injury and loss of form which ensured he did not score in his first six games this term after missing the opening three due to adductor problems.

The Nigerian has now scored 13 times in his last eight appearances in the Belgian top flight before the World Cup break.

Two seasons ago Onuachu set the record for the most goals in a single season in Belgium with 35 goals in 41 games. Despite major interest from clubs outside of Belgium, Onuachu has remained with Genk. The club are keen to keep the striker given their current league position and potential title chances.

Onuachu would not be the first striker Aston Villa have signed from Genk, with Mbwana Samatta making the move to the midlands back in January of 2020. Samatta is now back at Genk on loan from Fenerbahce.

In another report, Genk are reportedly ready to let Onuachu leave for €25m.

Belgian online news portal, Voetbal Primeur reports Genk will let Onuachu leave for €25m.

‘Onuachu’s situation remains something special,’ De Conde was quoted by Voetbal Primeur.

‘At his age, you never know what will happen. If an offer comes, we can’t just block it. But then Wouter and I will do everything we can to convince him to stay.’
