Atalanta 1-2 Napoli: Osimhen becomes Nigerian top scorer in Serie A history

Scores and bags assist to win beat Lookman in battle of Nigerian strikers in Italy

Victor Osimhen is now Nigeria’s top scorer in the Serie A with 32 goals after scoring once in Napoli’s 2-1 defeat of Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta on Saturday night in Bergamo.

The 23 year old had equalled Simy Nwankwo’s feat when he scored his first ever club career hat-trick in Napoli’s 4-0 defeat of Sasuolo last week.

Nwankwo scored 31 goals in 101 Serie A appearances across three seasons while Osimhen has moved one goal ahead of the 30 year in 41 fewer games.

Former Inter Milan striker, Obafemi Martins is third with 28 goals in 88 Serie A games.

Saturday’s game at Bergamo was dubbed the battle of brothers as Osimhen was pitched against fellow Nigeria striker, Ademola Lookman.

The Napoli forward had the last laugh as his goal and assist helped the visitors to maintain their unbeaten start to the Serie A season with a 2-1 victory.

Osimhen had accidentally gifted the homers the opener, but turned it around with a goal and assist for Eljif Elmas, as Napoli fight back to win the top of the table showdown and go eight points clear.

The goal was osimhen’s sixth in the last four games and eighth of the season in nine appearances after missing four games when he copped a biceps femoris muscle injury in the 2-1 defeat of Lazio in September.

The Super Eagles forward has also shot to the top of the scorers’ chart in the Serie A with eight goals, one more than Bologna’s Marko Arnautovic and two more than six others including Lookman.

The goal was also his second while the assist was his first in five games against Atalanta across all competitions.
