Athletics Kenya: Coaches can be held liable should their athletes fail drug tests

With over 30 Kenya athletes nabbed and sanctioned by the Athletics Integrity Unit, AIU, for using performance enhancing drugs, Athletics Kenya says coaches and games teachers who condone doping among young athletes face dire consequences.

According to a report in Daily Nation, Kenya’s authoritative daily newspaper, Athletics Kenya has warned coaches they will be held liable should their athletes fail drug tests.

Athletics Kenya’s Vice President in charge of competitions Paul Mutwii, according to the newsapper disclosed this on Friday during the federation’s seminar that brought together trainers and games teachers from primary and secondary schools from the Central region in Nyeri town.

Mutwii told coaches to promote clean sport and warned those found culpable of dire consequences.

‘We are the handlers of these runners. Can we find out who is out to spoil the reputation of our sportsmen and women?’ he was quoted to have said.

Meanwhile, Athletics Kenya’s Chief Administrative Officer Susan Kamau, according to the Daily Nation urged trainers to encourage athletes to go through the Kenya Doctors Network to ensure they take the right medication when sick.
