Awoniyi Reflects on Iconic Goal Against Liverpool

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has described his winning goal against Liverpool during the 2022/2023 Premier League season as one of the most unforgettable moments of his career.
Awoniyi, who joined Liverpool in 2015 but never made an official appearance due to work permit restrictions, spent six years on the club’s books before moving permanently to Union Berlin.
During his time with the Reds, he was loaned out to six different clubs, including FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, Racing Genk, Mainz 05, and Union Berlin.
On October 22, 2022, Awoniyi struck in the 55th minute at the City Ground, reacting quickest to slot home after his initial effort rebounded off the post.
His goal secured a 1-0 victory for Forest over Liverpool on matchday 13. Speaking to Nottingham Forest’s YouTube channel, the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner admitted the strike carried mixed emotions.
‘Nottingham Forest 1-0 against Liverpool on October 22, 2022. Scoring against them is a bit of mixed feeling,’ Awoniyi said.
‘Unfortunately, I didn’t get to play for them, but scoring for Forest against them, and looking at how much we were looking for the points at that time was something I will never forget as well.’
Awoniyi has continued to impress in recent weeks, registering five goal involvements, three goals and two assists, in his last five Premier League appearances.
