Awoniyi Sees Red for First Time in Premier League

Taiwo Awoniyi received the first Premier League red card of his career after being sent off in Coventry City’s clash with Brighton.
The Nigerian striker was shown a straight red card in the 52nd minute after raising his arm towards Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper while challenging for a long ball.
The referee’s decision to send Awoniyi off for violent conduct was reviewed and confirmed by VAR.
The assistant referee told the match official: ‘He has caught him in the face with his elbow.’
After reviewing the incident, the referee confirmed: ‘The final decision is red card for violent conduct.’
VAR then backed the decision, stating: ‘There’s a movement. Confirming the on-field decision of red card for violent conduct.’
The dismissal came on Awoniyi’s 94th Premier League appearance.
It is also the second red card of Awoniyi’s professional career.
His first came while playing for Belgian club Mouscron during the 2017/18 season.
The dismissal marks a disappointing milestone for the Nigerian, who had never previously been sent off in 93 Premier League appearances.
