Barry Ferguson: Calvin Bassey worth at least £10 million to Rangers

Barry Ferguson believes Calvin Bassey is worth at least £10 million to Rangers.

The 22-year-old has been outstanding for the Ibrox side this season, especially since the arrival of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Bassey’s been a revelation in a variety of roles and he’s been a major part of Rangers’ journey to the Europa League final.

Ferguson is a huge admirer of the ‘outstanding’ Nigerian international and the former Gers captain has urged Ibrox chiefs to offer him a new contract.

“I don’t want to put him under pressure but you’ve got to be looking at £10 million pound just now,” Ferguson told GO Radio.

“His development this year has been unbelievable. He’s grown each game, he’s getting stronger and he’s getting better.

“The beauty of him is that he can play left-back, left wing-back, in a back three and at left centre-back.

“A lot of people go on about Ryan Jack, James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Alfredo Morelos…but not a lot of people mention Bassey.

“He’s been outstanding and he’s one that Rangers need to get tied up on a long-term contract.

“If he produces these sorts of performances next season then Rangers are going to struggle to keep a hold of him.

“He fits the build for a defender.”

Ferguson is still well-connected at Ibrox and the former Alloa boss only hears good feedback on Bassey.

He said: “The thing that comes out the training ground is that he wants to learn and he’s always asking questions.

“He wants to stay out and make himself better.

Bassey has featured 47 times for Rangers so far this season and has bagged five assists.

In the Scottish Premiership, he has started all 26 games he has featured in, playing all 90 minutes in all.
