Bassey: Fulham Deserved All Three Points Against Aston Villa

Nigerian Defender Praises Away Performance But Regrets Missed Chances As Whites Settle For A Draw

Fulham captain Calvin Bassey believes his side deserved more than a point from Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park, insisting the visitors had enough chances to secure a third consecutive league victory.

The Nigerian defender praised his teammates for their performance against a Villa side he described as difficult to face on home soil but was disappointed that Fulham failed to convert their opportunities.

‘I think it was a good away performance. We know how hard it is to come here. It is a difficult place to come, a team with a lot of quality. We wanted a clean sheet, but proud of the boys. They did well,’ Bassey told Sky Sports.

However, the Fulham skipper felt his team could have taken all three points after wasting two clear opportunities inside the six-yard box.

‘I think we should have got more. We missed two chances inside the six-yard box. I know the boys are out there working their socks off to get in the right positions and finishing. We’ve just got to stay patient and keep trusting in them because we know the quality they have,’ he said.

‘I just think we could have taken all three. A bit unlucky, but we’ve got to keep positive.’

Bassey also stressed the importance of avoiding defeat, recalling previous occasions when Fulham had surrendered points after being in a position to take something from a game.

‘Games like this, we’ve seen in the past where we’ve been drawing and we’ve lost. Ipswich, for example. If we can’t win, it’s very important we don’t lose,’ he added.

The defender believes Fulham’s performances are improving as the season progresses, crediting the squad’s growing understanding of manager Marco Silva’s playing philosophy.

‘Since the start of the season, we’ve been improving each week and everyone all working hard. Everyone has bought into the way the manager wants to play. We’re starting to learn and understand each other. Hopefully, things are going up from now,’ he said.
