Bayern Confirm Kompany Hospitalised After Training Ground Collapse

Bayern Munich have officially confirmed that head coach Vincent Kompany is receiving medical treatment in hospital after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve team train on Friday, with his coaching staff taking temporary charge of first-team activities.
The German champions announced that the 40-year-old Belgian is undergoing thorough medical examinations and will remain under medical supervision, although the club did not disclose the cause of the collapse or provide a timetable for his return.
In an official statement released on Friday evening, Bayern confirmed that Kompany had been observing a training session involving the club’s second team when the incident occurred.
“Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday. The first-team head coach was watching the second string’s session,” the club stated.
“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice.”
Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, stressed that the club’s immediate concern was Kompany’s health rather than football matters, promising the Belgian all the support and time necessary to recover.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery,” Eberl said.
“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
The club’s confirmation followed earlier reports from Sky Germany and German newspaper BILD that emergency medical personnel had been called to Bayern’s Säbener Straße training facility after Kompany collapsed.
A rescue helicopter was also reportedly seen landing at the training ground before the manager was taken to a Munich hospital for medical attention.
The incident comes just days after Kompany revealed that he had been battling a viral infection which disrupted his preparations for Bayern’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Arsenal on Wednesday.
The illness forced him to miss the team’s final training session and pre-match press conference ahead of their 2-2 draw against the Premier League champions.
Speaking about the illness before Friday’s incident, Kompany admitted that he had pushed himself despite feeling unwell.
“As a coach, you always want to do everything. I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body. Then, at some point, my body said: ‘Now stop!'” he explained.
However, Bayern have not indicated whether the earlier viral infection was connected to Friday’s collapse.
