BREAKING: IJF Backs NSC Caretaker Committee For Nigeria Judo Federation, Asks For Progress Report

The International Judo Federation has endorsed the dissolution of the Nigeria Judo Federation board and the establishment of a caretaker committee by the National Sports Commission, putting to rest fears of a possible international ban over government interference.

In a letter dated 9th October 2026 and addressed to Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the Nigeria National Sports Commission, and signed by IJF Secretary General Dr. Lisa Allan, the world body acknowledged receipt of the Commission’s letter of 25th September 2026 on the administrative status of the Nigeria Judo Federation.

The IJF said it has duly noted the information concerning the dissolution of the NJF Board and the assumption of responsibilities by NJF Secretary General Ms Ngozi, as well as the establishment of the Caretaker Committee and its mandate to amend the NJF Constitution and convene the NJF electoral General Assembly.

It also noted that members of the Caretaker Committee have undertaken not to stand for election.

In a major boost for the NSC, the IJF said it welcomes the steps being taken to address the governance matters within the NJF and supports the efforts to ensure a transparent, fair and inclusive electoral process. The Federation said it trusts that the process will be conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and requirements.

The IJF wished the Commission success in the process and asked to be kept informed of progress, adding that it looks forward to continued cooperation.

The letter, with reference Subject: Re: Update on the administrative status of the Nigeria Judo Federation, effectively ratifies the NSC’s intervention under Section 16 of the National Sports Commission Act 2023, which had been criticised in some quarters as government interference.

With IJF’s written concurrence now secured, the caretaker committee led by the provision that members will not contest is now recognised as the legitimate interim administration of judo in Nigeria pending elections.

The endorsement means Nigeria Judo remains in good standing with the IJF and its athletes remain eligible for international competitions including the World Judo Tour and qualification pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
