Calderano halts Aruna Quadri’s run at WTT Singapore Smash

Hugo Calderano continued his dominance over Quadri Aruna at big stage as the world number five defeated the Nigerian 4-0 in the quarterfinal of the men’s singles at the WTT Singapore Smash taking place at the Sports Hub in Singapore.
The Brazilian played his best match against the African champion dominating in all departments to put an end to the unbeaten run of Aruna at the lucrative WTT Smash Series.
Both players started well in the first game playing with a lot of caution and matching each other in all departments. It was the South American that claimed the first game at 11-7.
The second game was balanced but Aruna raced to the lead at 10-7 needing a point to win but Calderano changed gear for the Nigerian to deuce the tie at 10-10 and went ahead to win at 12-10.
The third and fourth games were dictated by the tournament’s number five seed as he won 11-2, 11-2 to complete the 4-0 thrashing of Aruna and secured his place in the last four where he will face Olympic champion Ma Long of China.
Despite losing to Calderano, Aruna described his quarterfinal outing as not too good but took consolation in his overall performance in Singapore. “I think playing in this competition has increased my confidence going into any tournament because there was no easy match here and I gave my all in all the matches. I was not too happy with my display in the quarterfinal but I am happy that I once again showed what I can do on a big stage. I look ahead to more tournaments hoping to do well. I thank Nigerians, Africans and my fans all over the world for their outpouring support. The Nigerian media has been my strong supporters and I must also thank them for putting me out there. I will not stop working hard and giving my best all the time,” an appreciative Aruna said.
