Can Precious Opinion End Nigeria’s Long Wait for World U20 Men’s Triple Jump Medal?
Nigeria’s Precious Opinion will have the chance to make history on Friday when he competes in the men’s triple jump final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, aiming to become the first Nigerian man ever to win a medal in the event or any jumps event.
The sophomore at the University of Minnesota booked his place in the final in stunning fashion, producing a lifetime best and season’s best leap of 16.02m in the qualifying round.
It was the first time the 19-year-old had broken the 16-metre barrier, a performance that underlined his rapid development and established him as one of the contenders for a podium finish.
Should Opinion secure a medal, he would become only the second Nigerian man to win a field event medal at the World U20 Championships after Chinecherem Nnamdi claimed javelin bronze in Nairobi in 2021.
He would also become the first Nigerian man to reach the podium in the triple jump at the global junior championships.
Opinion enters the final with the joint seventh-best personal best in the field alongside Poland’s Krzysztof Rybnik, although several rivals boast stronger marks, including Cuba’s world leader Giann C. Baxter (16.80m), China’s Wang Zhuoyue (16.42m), American Miles Nesmith (16.41m) and Jamaica’s Michael-Andre Matthew Edwards (16.30m).
However, having achieved a breakthrough performance in qualifying, the Nigerian will be confident of challenging for another personal best when the medals are decided.
The Nigerian’s rise has been remarkable. After winning the Nigerian U20 long jump title and finishing fifth in the senior championships before moving to the University of Minnesota, Opinion enjoyed an impressive freshman collegiate season, qualifying for the NCAA West Regional in both the triple jump and long jump.
