‘Captain’ Saka extends Arsenal record with eighth goal involvement in six home games
For the ninth time in 11 UEFA Champions League games, Bukayo Saka has either scored or provided an assist after the 23-year-old scored Arsenal’s second goal in their matchday two group phase game at the Emirates stadium on Tuesday evening.
Saka’s low curling free-kick out wide somehow makes its way through a sea of legs and into the net on 35 minutes made it 2-0 for Arsenal after Kai Havertz had given the Gunners a 20th minute lead.
The goal was Saka’s fifth in six home games in the competition and has made the Nigeria-born winger extend his record as the first Arsenal player to be involved in eight goals in six Champions League appearances at the Emirates stadium (five goals and three assists). It is the most combined goals and assists by a Gunner through his first six home matches in the competition.
The Nigeria-born England international scored and assisted on his debut in the competition against PSV Eindhoven in September 2023. He followed up with an assist against RC Lens of France in a 2-1 loss the following month.
Saka scored and bagged an assist in each of his next two games in November 2023 against Sevilla and Lens respectively.
He also scored in the 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in April this year.
