Charlton, Azu among 11 World Indoor Tour winners given wild card entries for Glasgow

Reigning World 60m hurdles record holder, Deyvnne Charlton and Ghana-born British sprinter, Jeremiah Azu are among 11 athletes who have secured wild card spots for the World Athletics Indoor Championships starting next weekend in Glasgow, Scotland.

Both Charlton and Azu were among the 11 athletes who topped their respective disciplines following the conclusion of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series Friday in Madrid, Spain. The implication of the wild card is that some national teams for the global event in Glasgow, taking place on 1-3 March, will be strengthened by having a third team member in certain disciplines. Usually, team selection for the World Indoor Championships is capped at two athletes per nation per discipline, but these wild card places allow for a third athlete to compete. However, the final decision on entering any individual athlete for the World Indoor Championships, as always, rests with the athlete’s national federation.

In addition, each of the 2024 World Indoor Tour series winners receives a US$10,000 bonus.

Charlton outscored Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan by one point (28 to 27 points) to secure the $10,000 top prize money and the wild card. The Nigerian has however made the entry standard for the event and will be looking to get the most important win indoors at the World Indoors Championships.

The individual event winners of this year’s World Indoor also include 400m winner, Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands, Ethiopia’s 1500m winner, Freweyni Hailu, high jumper Urte Baikstyte of Lithuania as well as Milica Gardasevic of Serbia in the long jump.

For the men, Italy’s Catalin Tecuceanu in the 800m, Selemon Barega of Ethiopia in the 3000m Piotr Lisek of Poland in the Pole Vault, Algeria’s Yasser Mohammed Triki in the triple jump and New Zealander, Tom Walsh in the Shot Put.
