Chelsea Vs RB Salzburg: Blues seeking 100th victory in the Champions League

Chelsea will be targeting a 100th victory in the Champions League (including qualifying matches) when they host Austrian side, Red Bull Salzburg Wednesday at Stamford Bridge.

The Austrian team will be the 199th different opposition in the club’s history and a win will be historic on two fronts.

First it will be the club’s 100th victory in the competition while, second, it will be a historic debut for new manager, Graham Potter as he becomes the first Chelsea boss to open his Chelsea account in Europe’s elite competition.

Chelsea need three goals to reach 300 at Stamford Bridge in all European competitions.

This will also be the Blues’ 284th outing in Europe, and just four were previously against clubs from Austria – both Viennese. Wiener Sport Club were beaten 2-1 on aggregate in the 1965/66 Inter Cities Fairs Cup, and the away goals rule saw off Austria Vienna after a 1-1 draw over two legs in the 1994/95 Cup Winners’ Cup.

Meanwhile, Potter will also attempt to avoid an unwanted piece of history in his first game in charge of Chelsea on Wednesday.

The Blues have never lost their opening two Champions League games and a defeat on Wednesday would represent their worst-ever start in the competition.

Chelsea are also hoping to avoid consecutive defeats in the tournament for the first time since losing both Last 16 legs to Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 campaign.

Despite falling to defeat in Croatia, the signs are still positive for Chelsea, who are currently unbeaten in their last eight home games in the Champions League.
