Clash of Champions: Amusan Targets Redemption in Xiamen Diamond League
The women’s 100m hurdles is set for a blockbuster clash this Saturday as the Diamond League train makes its second stop in Xiamen.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, the reigning world record holder and three-time Diamond League champion, is expected to deliver a faster performance than the 12.41 seconds she clocked for third place at the Shanghai/Kepiao opener last weekend.
Amusan, who just days earlier claimed her third African Senior Athletics Championships title, expressed satisfaction with her Shanghai podium finish and refused to attribute her performance to fatigue.
She now enters Xiamen fully rested and ready to challenge Olympic champion Masai Russell, who stormed to a world-leading 12.25 seconds in Shanghai, and world indoor champion and record holder Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas who ran 12.38 for second.
The Xiamen race has been billed as the ‘Clash of the Champions,’ with the past four global titleholders in the event lining up. Alongside Russell, Charlton, and Amusan, the field features reigning world champion Ditaji Kambundji and two-time world champion Danielle Williams.
Together, they represent five of the ten fastest women in history over the distance.
Adding depth to the competition are Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent, the 2025 world indoor bronze medallist, and her compatriot Megan Simmonds, along with USA’s Tonea Marshall and China’s leading hurdlers Yanni Wu and Jingyang Liu.
With Olympic, world, Diamond League, and indoor champions all converging on the same track, anticipation is high that the Xiamen showdown could produce one of the fastest races in history, and perhaps even threaten the world record.
