Controversy trails Finidi’s reported resignation as Super Eagles head coach
NFF President not yet aware of development
Former Ajax winger, Finidi George, has reportedly resigned as head coach of Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles.
Former Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye had reported Finidi’s resignation on his post X.com (twitter) on Saturday.
‘News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.’
The reported resignation may not be unconnected to the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) to appoint a foreign coach to oversee him, despite his recent appointment in May.
In a swift reaction, President of the NFF, Ibrahim Gusau has, according to Punchonline, denied knowledge of Finidi’s resignation.
Gusau, according to Punchonline wrote ‘not yet aware’ in a WhatsApp message to the newspaper when asked to confirm the news.
Finidi was employed as Super Eagles head coach after the expiration of the contract of Jose Peseiro who led Nigeria to a second place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
The former Super Eagles winger’s appointment has however been called to question following Nigeria’s uninspiring and humiliating run in the two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and Benin Republic.
