Demehin Targets Back-to-Back WAFCON Glory as Super Falcons Camp Grows

Super Falcons defender Oluwatosin Demehin says winning the Women Africa Cup of Nations at her first attempt continues to inspire her as Nigeria prepares to defend its continental crown in Morocco.

Demehin, who made her WAFCON debut with the Super Falcons during the team’s successful title-winning campaign, said the experience gave her enormous confidence and strengthened her determination to continue improving whenever she represents Nigeria.

‘Winning the gold medal and the team lifting the Cup in my first Women AFCON always makes me feel special. It also gives me enormous confidence when we are playing a match or playing a tournament. It showed me what is possible with hard work and teamwork,’ Demehin said.

‘That success has continued to motivate me to keep improving, to keep helping the team in every way I can, and it is my driving force to fight with the team to defend our title in Morocco.’

The Galatasaray Sportive women defender has established herself as a key figure in the Super Falcons’ defence since the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand. She also played an important role in Nigeria’s successful title campaign in Morocco last summer.

With the tournament expanded to 16 teams, Demehin expects a more competitive contest but believes the Super Falcons possess the experience and quality required to challenge for another title.

‘It will be tough, as more teams are getting stronger in Africa. We are motivated to succeed, but we must be consistent, compact at the rear, fluid in midfield and clinical in attack,’ she added.

Meanwhile, AS Roma forward Omorinsola Babajide arrived in Morocco on Thursday evening to join the Super Falcons’ training camp in Casablanca.

Her arrival increased the number of players in camp to 12, following the arrival earlier in the day of Toni Payne, who recently completed a move to Inter Milan Women.

The Super Falcons are continuing preparations for their WAFCON title defence as more members of the squad arrive in camp.
