Double Blow for Nigeria: Flying Eagles Crushed by Burkina Faso After Falcons’ Exit
It was another disappointing Sunday for Nigerian football as the Flying Eagles suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.
The defeat came just hours after the Super Falcons’ painful WAFCON semi-final exit to Cameroon, making it a particularly difficult day for Nigeria’s football fans.
While the Falcons were denied a place in the WAFCON final, the Flying Eagles saw their regional title defence collapse in emphatic fashion against a Burkina Faso side that had already beaten them in the group stage.
Burkina Faso produced a devastating first-half performance, scoring three times to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the interval. Nigeria struggled to cope with the Young Stallions’ pace, direct running and attacking pressure, with defensive lapses leaving Abdu Maikaba’s boys with a mountain to climb.
The Flying Eagles showed greater urgency after the break and were rewarded when Muiz Adeleke converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
Nigeria pushed forward in search of a remarkable comeback, but Burkina Faso remained compact and disciplined before sealing the trophy with a fourth goal late in the game.
The Young Stallions deservedly lifted the WAFU B U-20 trophy and, alongside hosts Ghana, secured qualification as the zone’s representatives for next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
