Eagles Euro Boxing Day Review: Arokodare moves top of Belgian Pro League goals chart, Onuachu completes for 90 minutes in the Premier League
Tolu Arokodare has moved clear at the top of the top scorers’ chart in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League for the 2024/25 season after netting a brace to rescue a point for his club, KRC Genk at the Bosuilstadion in their 2-2 draw with Royal Antwerp in a matchday 20 clash.
The Festac-born Arokodare has now scored 13 goals in 20 league games this season, one more than RSC Anderlecht’s Kasper Dolberg who has netted 12 goals in 18 appearances and could draw level or surpass the Nigerian if he scores on Friday when his club host FCV Dender EH at the Lotto Park.
Still in Belgium, Raphael Onyedika is still out injured as he was missing once again for his club, Club Brugge in their pulsating 4-3 defeat of Westerlo at the Jan Breydel Stadion.
In England, Alex Iwobi made his 18th straight start for Fulham who harmed their guest with a late goal to win 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Iwobi’s Nigerian compatriot at the Calvin Bassey was also in action as he made his 17th start after missing a game through suspension.
At the Saint Mary’s stadium, Paul Onuachu started his second game in the Premier League this term but could not save his side, Southampton from losing again. The 30 year old is still looking to score his first Premier League goal after 19 appearances.
The gangling forward also completed his first 90 minutes in the Premier League on his 19th game and since he joined from KRC Genk in January 2023.
Onuachu’s compatriot, Joe Aribo was subbed on in the 61st minute for Flynn Downes. It was his first substitute appearance in three games after starting the Saints’ last two Premier League games.
At the City Ground, Ola Aina started for the 18th time in a row when his club, Nottingham Forest defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0. Aina who scored his second goal of the season in his club’s
2-0 of Brentford last week was not on target this time.
Also not on target was Taiwo Awoniyi who was subbed on for Chris Wood on 87 minutes.
The 27 year old has been subbed on in 11 of the 13 Premier League games he has featured in this season and has not scored.
This time last season, the Nigerian had scored four of the six goals he scored in the entire season while in his debut season for the club and in the Premier League, he scored three of the 10 goals before the new year.
