Eagles to face Gambia, Mali or Tunisia in Round of 16

The Super Eagles will face one of Gambia, Mali or Tunisia in the round of 16 on Sunday.

This followed group E’s failure to produce one of the third best placed teams after the conclusion of penultimate games of the group phase of the ongoing 33rd Africa Cup of Nations.

Algeria lost to Ivory Coast while Sierra Leone were also beaten by Equatorial Guinea which means the third placed team in the group has just two points.

This effectively knocked Sierra Leone who are third in the group out of contention leaving only Gambia, Mali or Tunisia in group F as the team Nigeria will face on Sunday in Garoua.

Interestingly, Gambia and Tunisia will face off later Thursday night and a win for Gambia will ensure they finish either first or second irrespective of the game between Mali and Mauritania.

A win for Tunisia will leave Gambia to either finish second or third while a loss for Mali, depending on the scores will determine if they remain second or finish third with four points.

A draw for Tunisia and loss for Mali will not alter the position as both will end up on four points with the West Africans edging the tie due to their head to head record against Tunisia.
