Echegini makes history with 500th goal of Women’s Olympic Football Tournament

The Super Falcons may have crashed out of the football event of the Paris Olympics at the group stage but a member of the team has gone down in history for her milestone achievement.

Midfielder, Jennifer Echegini who plays for Première Ligue club Paris Saint-Germain in France has not only made history as the scorer of Nigeria’s lone goal in the competition but she is also holds the distinction of scoring the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament’s 500th goal, when she powered home a terrific effort from the edge of the box against Japan.

Echegini’s goal was the first the team will score in the competition since 2004 when Mercy Akide netted in the 2-1 loss to Germany in the 2-1 loss to Germany in the quarterfinals.

The Super Falcons scored three goals in their debut at the Games in 2000 in Sydney, Australia with Perpetua Ijeoma Nkwocha netting the team’s first goal at the games in the 3-1 loss to China.

The team also scored thrice four years later in Athens, Greece with Mercy Akide scoring twice after Vera Okolo scored the goal that sunk Japan and secured the Super Falcons their first and only quarterfinal ticket in three appearances.

In 2008, the Super Falcons scored only once via Nkwocha before crashing out at the group stage.
