Edokpayi ‘sacked’ as Onome Obruthe named new Edo Athletics Association Chairman

Barrister Dele Edokpayi has been removed as Chairman of Edo state Athletics Federation by the Edo state Sports Commission.

This development was made known to the public on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 by the Edo state Sports Commission, the body that appointed him some years ago.

Until his sack, Edokpayi, as a member of the AFN Congress was appointed the legal adviser to the AFN Electoral Committee and, attended the Congress where the AFN Congress violated relevant articles of the AFN Constitution on the appointment of the Electoral Committee.

Meanwhile, a sports enthusiast and one of the men who made the Niger Delta Sports Festival a huge success, Onome Obruthe has been appointed as his replacement.

Young and dynamic, Obruthe is well known for championing healthy living through I am alive and thankful run and walk which culminated in a 7km run and walk event last December.

The South south of Nigeria looks to be preparing for a new generation of leaders to rejig sports development at the zone and two of the men behind the Niger Delta Sports Festival are now firmly in charge of athletics development at their states.

Recently, Delta state Sports Commission also appointed Sir Itiako Ikpokpo popularly called Malik as the new Chairman of Delta State Athletics Association, replacing Evangelist Solomon Ogba.

With this development, Edokpayi and Ogba have ceased to become the leader of athletics in their state and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has been on notice.
