Eguavoen: CAF says we can only replace Ighalo on medical ground

Austin ‘Cerezo’ Eguavoen, the Super Eagles interim manager has revealed why Odion Ighalo will not be replaced in the team.

Ighalo has been stopped by his Saudi Arabia club from linking up with the Super Eagles for the AFCON following NFF’s inability to meet the deadline for the player’s invitation.

‘CAF has told us we cannot replace Ighalo. I had wanted to call up the boy from Nasarawa United Silas or former Golden Eaglets star, Akinkunmi Amao but we have been told we can only replace on medical ground,’ says Eguavoen in an interview after the team’s first training session in Garoua, Cameroun.

CAF’s article 72.2 on tournaments regulations says players can only be replaced after the confirmation of squad list on medical grounds only.

”A player on the final list cannot be replaced unless seriously injured at the latest 24 hours at least before the beginning of the first match of his team’s, the article says.

Eguavoen says he is more relaxed now than he was two weeks ago barely five days to Nigeria’s opening group game against Mohammed Salah’s Egypt in Garoua.
