Ekevwo, Amusan Shine At World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Level Meet In Bydgoszcz
Echikunwoke Fifth In Women's Hammer Throw
Reigning African Games men’s 100m and women’s 100m hurdles champion, Raymond Ekevwo and Tobiloba Amusan placed third and second respectively Friday at the Irena Szewinska Memorial 2022, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Level meet in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Ekevwo ran 10.19s to place third in the men’s 100m race behind USA’s Elijah Hall-Thompson who ran a new 10.02s personal best and Azu Jeremiah of Great Britain who ran a new personal season’s best of 10.18s.
The Nigerian who holds a personal season’s best of 10.04s qualified for the final after running 10.21s to place second in the second qualifying heat behind Hall-Tompson (10.08s).
In the women’s 100m hurdles, Amusan lost the top spot to USA’s Tia Jones by the narrowest of margins after she ran 12.80s, one hundreth of a second slower than the American’s 12.79s return.
Amusan, the reigning African Games 100m hurdles record holder ran 12.93s to win her qualifying heat while Jones won the second heat in 13.04s.
Meanwhile, Nigeria and African women’s hammer record holder, Echikunwoke Annette threw 69.87m to place fifth in her event.
It is the 25 year old’s first throw below the 70m mark so far this outdoor season. She holds a personal season’s best of 73.67m which she achieved at the Tucson Elite Classic, University of Arizona last month and a personal best and African record throw of 75.49m at the same Tuscon event a year earlier.
