Ese Brume wins in Brussels, shifts focus to 2023

Nigerian not happy with performance but satisfied with result

Reigning Commonwealth Games long jump champion and record holder Ese Brume capped a brilliant night of athletics at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, Belgium by claiming first place in the long jump event.

The 26 year old Nigerian leapt a distance of 6.83m in her third attempt to win.

Brume led from the start when she jumped 6.45m to the end to emerge the winner ahead of Quanesha Burks of USA who came second (6.54m) and Italy’s Iapichino Larissa whose 6.52m final round effort was good enough for the third place.

The Nigerian expressed disappointment with her performance on the night.
”It wasn´t my best performance, but I´m satisfied with the result and the win.

Sometimes at the end of a long season it´s not easy to keep motivated, but I also try to remind myself about why I´m doing this and that keeps me going,’ she said after the event.

Brume has had a fulfilled season after claiming a world indoor silver to become the second Nigerian after Glory Alozie to win medals at the two flagship events of World Athletics, the indoor and outdoor world championships.

She also improved on the bronze medal she won at the world outdoor championships in Doha three years ago with a silver medal finish at the Oregon edition last July.

The five-time Nigeria long ju,mp champion says that silver medal win is the highlight of her very successful season.

”The silver medal at the world championship this summer was the highlight of my career so far, but I work very hard to get even better next year,’ she added.
