Ezechukwu Disqualified for Lane Infringement as Oyibu Storms into World U20 200m Final
Oluebube Ezechukwu’s bid for a place in the women’s 200m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon ended in disappointment after she was disqualified for a lane infringement under Technical Rule 17.2.3.
The ruling brought Ezechukwu’s championship campaign to an abrupt end and left fellow Nigerian Oghene Success Oyibu as the country’s sole representative in the women’s 200m final.
Oyibu made the most of her opportunity, storming to victory in the third semi-final in 23.13 seconds from Lane 8.
She finished ahead of South Africa’s Rume Burger, who clocked 23.18, and Antigua and Barbuda’s Tyra Fenton, who ran 23.25. As one of the first three finishers in her heat, Oyibu secured automatic qualification for the final.
Her qualification has now placed her at the centre of Nigeria’s hopes of ending a remarkable 40-year wait for women’s 200m gold at the World U20 Championships.
Nigeria’s first and only women’s 200m gold at the championships came at the inaugural edition in Athens in 1986, when Falilat Ogunkoya produced a historic victory. Four decades later, Nigeria is still waiting for another champion in the event.
The country did return to the podium in 2021 when Favour Ofili won bronze, marking Nigeria’s second women’s 200m medal at the championships. Oyibu now has the chance to become only the second Nigerian woman to win the event and the first since Ogunkoya’s breakthrough triumph in 1986.
