Faye Begins Quest to Extend Nigeria’s Rich 200m Legacy at World U20 Championships
Nigeria’s teenage sprint sensation Perfect Faye will launch his quest for World Athletics U20 Championships glory on Friday when he lines up in the opening round of the men’s 200m in Oregon, aiming to become the third Nigerian to win the prestigious title.
The 16-year-old, who owns a personal best of 21.24 seconds, faces a stern test after being drawn in Heat Three from lane nine.
He will take on Jamaica’s Gary Card (20.28), South Africa’s Caylon Ryan (20.65), Japan’s Tomoro Ide (20.82) and Ireland’s Dubem Amah (20.98) in one of the most competitive heats.
The first three athletes in each of the seven heats, along with the next six fastest times overall, will advance to the semi-finals.
Nigeria boasts a proud history in the men’s 200m at the World U20 Championships. Francis Obikwelu became the country’s first champion in 1996 after completing the sprint double, while Udodi Onwuzurike secured Nigeria’s second title in Nairobi in 2021.
The country’s medal tradition began with Olapade Adeniken, who claimed silver in 1988, before Davidson Ezinwa added another silver medal in 1990. Divine Oduduru also finished runner-up at the 2014 championships, reinforcing Nigeria’s status as one of the strongest nations in the event.
Despite the challenging draw, Faye will be hoping to deliver a standout performance, book his place in the semi-finals and continue Nigeria’s proud tradition in one of its most successful events at the World U20 Championships.
