FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Target Bounce-Back Win Against Puerto Rico

Nigeria’s Flamingos will be seeking their first victory at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when they face Puerto Rico on Tuesday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 4, in Rabat.
The Group B encounter, scheduled for 7pm Nigerian time, comes after both teams suffered defeats in their opening matches, leaving them under pressure to secure points and keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage alive.
Nigeria lost 2-1 to Poland in their opener but showed greater attacking intent in the second half and created opportunities to rescue a draw. The defeat left the Flamingos needing a stronger result against Puerto Rico to improve their position in the group.
Puerto Rico, making their tournament debut, endured a difficult first half against Korea DPR, trailing 5-0 at the interval. However, the North Americans showed resilience after the break, conceding only once in the second half against opponents regarded among the title contenders.
The contrasting nature of the opening defeats gives Tuesday’s meeting added importance. Nigeria will hope to build on the promising aspects of their second-half display against Poland, while Puerto Rico will look to carry the defensive improvement they showed after the interval against Korea DPR into their clash with the African side.
With both teams chasing their first points, the encounter could prove decisive in shaping their campaigns in Group B, which also features Poland and Korea DPR.
The Flamingos, bronze medallists at the 2022 edition, will be determined to avoid another setback as they seek to recover from their opening loss and strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
