FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifier: Falconets Secure First-Leg Advantage Over Malawi in Ikenne
Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, took a decisive step toward another FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup appearance with a 2-0 victory over Malawi’s Young Scorchers in their final round first-leg clash on Saturday.
The hosts dominated from the outset, creating numerous chances but were repeatedly denied by Malawi goalkeeper Emily Nkhwazi.
Coach Moses Adukwu’s side returned from halftime with renewed urgency, and the breakthrough came in the 47th minute when defender Maureen Kenneth inadvertently turned the ball into her own net.
Ten minutes later, Kindness Ifeanyi doubled Nigeria’s lead after a precise assist from Faridat Abdulwahab, giving the Falconets the cushion their relentless pressure deserved. Malawi mounted a late push, but Nigeria’s defense held firm to secure the win.
The victory also brought financial reward, as Hon. Kunle Soname, President of Remo Stars FC and Beyond Limits Football Academy, fulfilled his promise of ₦500,000 per goal, awarding the team ₦1 million.
With the aggregate advantage, the Falconets now travel to Lilongwe for the return leg at Bingu National Stadium on Saturday, May 9, aiming to complete the job and extend their perfect record of appearances at the U20 Women’s World Cup since its inception in 2002.
