FIFA World Cup 2026: Oyarzabal Brace Sends Spain Past Austria

Spain delivered a commanding performance to defeat Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice and Pedro Porro adding his first international goal.

The victory, played at Los Angeles Stadium, marked Spain’s first knockout success at a World Cup since their 2010 triumph in South Africa.

La Roja will now face either Portugal or Croatia in Dallas on July 6 in the Round of 16.

Spain’s intent was clear from the opening minute when Lamine Yamal tested goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. Marc Cucurella thought he had put Spain ahead from a corner, but the effort was ruled out for a foul.

Oyarzabal eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, steering in Cucurella’s low cross for his third goal of the tournament.

Austria threatened briefly after halftime, with substitute Sasa Kalajdzic heading over from Marcel Sabitzer’s delivery.

But Spain quickly reasserted control, as Alex Baena’s cross was met by Porro for a powerful header to double the lead.

Oyarzabal sealed the win in the 89th minute, sliding in his second from another Cucurella assist.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon recorded his fifth consecutive World Cup clean sheet, surpassing Italy’s Walter Zenga’s 1990 record with 519 minutes without conceding.

Lamine Yamal was named Player of the Match for his creativity and relentless attacking play.
