FIFA World Cup 2026: Super Sub Undav Breaks Ivorian Hearts!

Deniz Undav came off the bench to score twice as Germany overturned a first-half deficit to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 and secure passage to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

Franck Kessie had given the Ivorians hope of qualification with a 30th-minute strike, finishing from close range after Amad Diallo’s effort was blocked. But Germany responded in the second half, with coach Julian Nagelsmann’s substitutions proving decisive.

Introduced on the hour, Nadiem Amiri delivered an inch-perfect cross for Undav to head home the equaliser in the 68th minute.

The forward then struck again deep into stoppage time, turning smartly onto Lukas Nmecha’s pass before firing past Yahia Fofana to seal victory at Toronto Stadium.

Germany had threatened early, with Kai Havertz and Joshua Kimmich both testing the Ivorian goalkeeper, while Aleksandar Pavlovic saw a header ruled out for a foul.

Côte d’Ivoire held firm and nearly regained the lead through Simon Adingra, but a heavy touch denied him a clear chance.

Undav’s brace ensured Germany maintained their perfect start, topping Group E with six points from two matches. Côte d’Ivoire remain second with three points, while Ecuador and Curaçao are yet to register a win.

The victory also extended Undav’s remarkable scoring run, with nine goals in his last eight international appearances. He was named Player of the Match for his decisive contribution.

Germany now await the outcome of Curaçao’s clash with Ecuador to determine whether they advance as group winners, but their place in the knockout stage is already assured.
