FIFA World Cup Round of 16: Ancelotti Keeps Calm as Brazil Readies for Haaland Threat
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti struck a calm and measured tone as he addressed reporters at MetLife Stadium ahead of Sunday’s World Cup Round of 16 clash against Norway.
Norway’s coach Ståle Solbakken has already labeled Brazil as ‘favorites,’ but Ancelotti brushed off the pressure, insisting his side is focused and prepared for the challenge.
He acknowledged the threat posed by Erling Haaland, who has been in formidable form, but emphasized that Brazil’s defenders know him well.
‘Everyone knows Haaland, I don’t need to explain to my defenders how he plays. They’ve faced him many times and know him better than I do. We’re preparing with his characteristics in mind because he’s a very, very dangerous striker,’ Ancelotti said.
The Italian manager also addressed squad updates, noting that Lucas Paquetá’s absence will require tactical adjustments.
‘We don’t have another player with Lucas’ exact qualities, but we have others with different characteristics. I need to think about what kind of game we want to play on Sunday and choose accordingly,’ he explained.
On Raphinha’s fitness, Ancelotti confirmed progress: ‘Raphinha is progressing very well, but he’s not at 100% yet. He’s available and might get a few minutes to help the team. We’re very happy because he’s extremely important for us.’
Asked about Brazil’s tactical approach, Ancelotti laughed off revealing details but praised Vinícius Júnior’s versatility: ‘Vinicius hurts teams on the outside… and on the inside too. He’s a constant threat.’
He also confirmed that Vinícius and Neymar can play together, saying, ‘I think they will.’
Despite being labeled favorites, Ancelotti stressed respect for Norway’s strengths.
‘Norway is a tough, well‑structured team. They’re compact, balanced, and dangerous going forward. It’s hard to find quick transitions because they control the midfield well,’ he noted.
Reflecting on Brazil’s resilience, he pointed to their comeback against Japan in the previous round.
‘We’re confident because we’re coming off a great knockout match against Japan. We want to improve, and we’re ready. You suffer because every opponent is difficult, look at Argentina against Cape Verde.’
