Flamingos Edge Mexico 2-1 To Reach 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Flamingos have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 clash at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Thursday.

Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan gave the Nigerian girls a two-goal cushion before Emily Delgado pulled one back for Mexico deep into stoppage time.

Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute to give Nigeria the advantage before the break, rewarding the Flamingos for their efforts in an entertaining first half.

Mexico attempted to fight their way back into the contest after the restart, but Nigeria maintained their composure and doubled their lead through Dunstan in the 71st minute.

The second goal appeared to put the Flamingos in control, but Mexico refused to give up and continued to search for a way back into the game.

Their persistence paid off in the 10th minute of stoppage time when Delgado found the net, with Camila Campos providing the assist, setting up a tense finish.

However, the Nigerian girls held on through the remaining minutes to secure victory and advance to the last eight of the competition.

The result keeps Nigeria’s hopes of winning the U-17 Women’s World Cup alive as they continue their campaign in Morocco.
