Flying Eagles Maintain Perfect Start, Thrash Togo 3-0 to Reach Semi-Finals
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have secured a place in the semi-finals of the WAFU B U20 Championship after defeating Togo’s Sparrow Hawks 3-0 in their second Group B match in Yamoussoukro on Thursday.
The victory, which followed Monday’s entertaining 4-2 triumph over Ghana’s Black Satellites, ensured the seven-time African champions maintained a perfect record and booked an early ticket to the last four of the regional tournaments.
Despite Nigeria’s bright start, Togo proved resilient in the opening half and nearly punished the Flying Eagles in the 38th minute when they squandered a clear scoring opportunity by shooting wide.
Both teams created chances in an end-to-end finish to the first half, but neither side could find the breakthrough as they went into the interval locked at 0-0.
The Flying Eagles returned with renewed intensity after the restart and broke the deadlock just one minute into the second half. Muiz Adeleke, who scored twice against Ghana in Nigeria’s opening fixture, continued his rich vein of form by firing the Flying Eagles into a 1-0 lead.
Nigeria remained in control despite Togo’s attempts to respond, and Adeleke doubled the advantage in the 59th minute after leading a swift counterattack, rounding the goalkeeper before calmly slotting home his second goal of the match.
The Flying Eagles continued to threaten and eventually sealed an emphatic victory in the 85th minute when substitute Abdoulaye Agbejoye, who had just replaced Adeleke, marked his introduction with a goal to make it 3-0.
The convincing win sends Nigeria into the semi-finals with maximum points from two matches. The Flying Eagles will now face Burkina Faso on Sunday as they continue their quest for the WAFU B U20 title.
