Francis James Smashes 10km PB To Win Abeokuta Race

Musa Francis James and Ilya Raymond both smashed their 10km road personal bests as James won the fifth Abeokuta 10km Race in Ogun State on Saturday.

James clocked 30:25.33 to claim the men’s $1,000 first prize, improving by more than 20 seconds on his previous PB of 30:46 set at Okpekpe on May 25, 2024.

His new mark is subject to ratification.

Raymond also produced a huge improvement, running 30:38.06 for second place and lowering his previous personal best of 32:04, set in Lagos on February 10, 2024, by 1:25.94. He earned $750 for finishing second.

Gyang Sunday completed the men’s podium in 30:47.00 to take home $500.

In the women’s race, Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo claimed the top prize after crossing the finish line in 35:00.69.

Bulus Mary Jah finished second in 35:58.71 for $750, while Nwantiyi Teyei Davou took third in 36:03.09 and earned $500.

James said he was delighted to see his preparation rewarded with victory and a personal best.

‘I’m very happy with the victory. It feels good to see all the hard work and preparation pay off,’ he said.

Akanbi was equally pleased with her victory, saying the race had rewarded her preparation.

‘I am very happy to have won the women’s race. It was not easy, but I am glad that all the hard work paid off,’ she said.

The fifth edition of the Abeokuta 10km Race attracted competitive runners, fitness enthusiasts and members of the public, continuing to provide a platform for athletes to compete in the city.
