From Hurdle One to the Finish: How Russell Broke Amusan’s World Record in Zurich

Masai Russell produced a remarkably consistent performance to break Tobi Amusan’s women’s 100m hurdles world record with 12.09 seconds at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, according to the detailed race analysis.

The American was ahead from the very first hurdle and maintained the advantage throughout the race, eventually crossing the finish line 0.14 seconds ahead of Amusan, who clocked a season’s best of 12.23 seconds.

Russell made the decisive early move, reaching the first hurdle in 2.40 seconds compared with Amusan’s 2.46. She extended her advantage to 0.07 seconds by the second hurdle and maintained that margin through hurdles three and four.

Although Amusan responded strongly in the middle section, including a quicker 0.92-second split between hurdles four and five compared with Russell’s 0.94, Russell remained in front. The American reached the seventh hurdle 0.04 seconds ahead and continued to control the race.

The crucial moment came in the closing stages. Russell reached hurdle nine in 10.00 seconds, 0.06 ahead of Amusan, before increasing the gap to 0.09 seconds at the tenth hurdle, which she reached in 10.95 compared with Amusan’s 11.04.

Russell then produced her strongest acceleration after the final hurdle, covering the closing section in 1.14 seconds, while Amusan took 1.19. That final surge added another 0.05 seconds to Russell’s advantage and carried her to a sensational 12.09, three hundredths faster than Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12.

The performance was achieved in a 0.0m/s wind, meaning Russell broke the world record without any wind assistance.

While Amusan remained competitive for much of the race, the analysis shows that Russell’s combination of a faster start, consistent hurdle rhythm and powerful finish proved decisive as she ended the Nigerian’s four-year reign as world-record holder.
