Oji Eyes Historic Shot Put Title as Nigerians Target More Finals
Day two of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships promises more Nigerian brilliance as sprinter Tima Godbless and quartermiler Favour Onyah begin their bids for national crowns, while shot putter Jessica Oji targets history.
Godbless, who claimed bronze last year, is determined to climb higher on the podium but faces one of the toughest sprint fields of the season.
Drawn in the third and final opening-round heat, she must contend with four sub-11 second performers: Jamaican Shenese Walker, the world’s second-fastest woman this year with 10.80; American Kaila Jackson, who clocked 10.93 last month; Dajaz DeFrand, boasting a 10.98 season’s best; and Taniya Looney, who sped to 10.85 aided by a marginal tailwind.
Godbless will be chasing one of the two automatic qualifying spots to Friday’s final.
In the 400m, Onyah, Nigeria’s new quartermile sensation, enters her heat as the second-fastest with 50.25, trailing only Kayln Brown, who has run 49.54 this season and owns a lifetime best of 49.13.
Onyah will be joined by compatriot Chioma Nwachukwu in the same heat. Meanwhile, Esther Joseph lines up in lane two of the opening heat, where she faces world leader Dejanea Oakley (48.92), Sanaria Butler (49.86), Rachel Joseph (50.08), and Alexia Smith (50.51) in a battle for two automatic tickets to Saturday’s final.
Away from the track, Nigeria’s Jessica Oji will step into the shot put circle with history on her mind. Ranked second in the collegiate standings by Track and Field News, Oji is aiming to become the first Nigerian woman ever to capture the NCAA shot put title.
