Godson Oghenebrume out of Paris 2024 Olympics?

There is a huge question mark over the participation of sprinter, Godson Oghenebrume in the athletics event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games which starts on August 1 in Paris, France.

The 21 year old is rumored to have been injured during training at Team Nigeria’s pre-Games training camp in Saarbrucken, Germany and has been reportedly ruled out for up to eight weeks which effectively knocks him out of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Sportsnow.com.ng’s impeccable source says the Athletics Federation of Nigeria will issue a statement on the correct status of the sprinter who was included in Team Nigeria track and field’s 35-man list despite not competing at the National Trials, a condition the federation insisted must be fulfilled to be available for selection.

‘An official statement will be made when a medical decision is made,’ said the source in a message sent to Sportsnow.com.ng.

If Oghenebrume is eventually ruled, it will be the second time he will be knocked out by injury on the eve of a major championships.

Recall the athlete withdrew from the World Athletics Championships last year in Budapest, Hungary after he was selected by the AFN despite not coming home for the National Trials.

‘I want to thank everyone who supported me. This is a hard decision for me but with much consideration I’ve decided to focus on getting healthy for next year, with that being said I will not be competing at Budapest this August,’ the athlete wrote on his X page last August.

It is not yet certain if the AFN will take advantage of the International Olympic Committee, IOC’s Late Athlete Replacement (LAR) rules.

The Late Athlete Replacement (LAR) rules state that after the entries deadline and where there are medical conditions preventing participation of an athlete or other exceptional reasons, the IOC may authorize a permanent replacement of an athlete.
