Handball Nations Cup: Golden Arrows Crushed by Egypt but Remain in World Championship Hunt

Nigeria’s senior men’s handball team, the Golden Arrows, suffered a heavy 48-22 defeat to defending champions Egypt in the main round of the 27th Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

Despite the setback, Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 World Men’s Handball Championship in Germany remain alive.

The Golden Arrows, who have won three and lost two matches so far in the tournament, will now compete in the 5th-8th placement semi-final, where victory in both remaining matches would secure Africa’s fifth and final qualification slot.

Captain Stephen Sessugh, who scored five goals against Egypt, admitted disappointment but insisted the team’s dream is still within reach.

‘We gave our best, but Egypt is a strong team, and we knew it would be a tough game. However, we are still alive in this competition and have another opportunity to make history,’ he said.

Egypt, nine-time champions, dominated from the start, racing to a 24-10 halftime lead.

Their top scorer Emad Mohammed was in unstoppable form, netting 12 goals, while their fluid passing and defensive solidity left Nigeria struggling to find openings. Nigerian goalkeeper Micheal Solomon produced several key saves, but Egypt’s relentless attack proved too much.

For Nigeria, Hakeem Salami, Faruk Yusuf, John Shagari and Azeez Sulaiman worked tirelessly to create chances, but Egypt’s defensive wall held firm.

Coach Rafiu Salami’s side will now regroup for the placement semi-finals, knowing that two wins would deliver Nigeria’s first-ever qualification for the World Championship, a landmark achievement for the sport in the country.

The Golden Arrows will turn their focus to the upcoming fixtures, determined to bounce back and etch their names into Nigerian handball history.
