Harry Maguire ‘to miss Wolves match through injury’
Harry Maguire will miss Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday evening through injury.
The Red Devils captain played the full 90 minutes against Burnley on Thursday night but is believed to have picked up an issue during his side’s 3-1 win at Old Trafford.
Maguire was not pictured with the Man United squad on Sunday, and according to The Athletic, the England international is injured for the match against Wolves.
Victor Lindelof is also out, as he continues to recover from coronavirus, meaning that Phil Jones or Eric Bailly could start alongside Raphael Varane in the middle of the back four.
Nemanja Matic could also be considered for a spot in central defence, but Varane is expected to start after being rested from the start against Burnley, having only just returned from injury.
Maguire, who has faced criticism for his performances this season, has made 20 appearances for the Red Devils during the 2021-22 campaign, including 16 outings in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s have the highest win ratio for Premier League matches in January (65.5 per cent), with 74 victories from 113 fixtures. This is the highest monthly win ratio of any side in the competition. January marks Wolverhampton Wanderers’ lowest win ratio in a specific month in the competition, at only 17.2 per cent, or five victories in 29 matches.
The Red Devils have won their last three Premier League matches against Wolves, their best winning sequence against them in the league since a run of five between 1964 and 1968.
None of Wolves’ last seven Premier League matches have featured more than one goal (three goalless draws; two 1-0 victories and two 1-0 defeats). Only two sides have had longer such runs in the competition: Crystal Palace, with eight matches between November 1994 and January 1995; and Burnley, with nine matches between April 2015 and August 2016.
And Wolves haven’t won their first match of the calendar year in any of their last seven Premier League campaigns (D2 L5). Their last such win as a top-flight side came in 1981 against Middlesbrough.
