‘He Is Part of the Nottingham Forest Family’: Marinakis Hails Awoniyi as ‘Defining Figure’ After Move to Coventry

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has described Taiwo Awoniyi as one of the ‘defining figures’ in the club’s recent history following the Nigerian striker’s £9 million transfer to Coventry City.
Awoniyi’s four-year spell at the City Ground officially ended this week after Forest confirmed his move to Coventry.
The 29-year-old joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 following the club’s promotion to the Premier League and went on to make 103 appearances, scoring 23 goals.
In a rare public tribute to a departing player, Marinakis praised Awoniyi’s contribution to Forest and highlighted the determination he showed in overcoming challenges during his time at the club.
‘Taiwo will always have a special place in the history of Nottingham Forest. He has been one of the defining figures in our journey and given our supporters moments of great joy that will never be forgotten,’ Marinakis said.
‘Throughout his time with us, Taiwo has shown great strength, determination and positivity, overcoming great challenges along the way. He embraced this club from the first day and his passion and character are why he is so loved by everyone connected to Nottingham Forest.’
Awoniyi played a key role in Forest’s return to the Premier League, scoring important goals during the club’s first season back in the top flight as they secured their survival.
The Nigeria international suffered a serious abdominal injury in May 2025 but returned last season to score four goals, including a brace against Chelsea.
Marinakis added: ‘We thank Taiwo for everything he has given to this club. He leaves with our gratitude, our respect and our very best wishes for the future. He will always be part of the Forest family and will always be welcomed home.’
