Iheanacho seeking to equal Emenike’s AFCON goal record vs Sudan

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho will be seeking to equal a goal record set nine years ago by Emmanuel Emenike if he scores against Sudan tomorrow in Nigeria’s second group D game of the on-going African Nations Cup in Cameroun.

After scoring in his very first Africa Cup of Nations game against Egypt on Tuesday, Iheanacho could become the first Nigerian player to score in his first two AFCON appearances since Emenike in January 2013.

Emenike scored a goal each in the 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso and Zambia in his first two AFCON games and went on to become the tournament’s top scorer with five goals which propelled Nigeria to her third AFCON title.

Iheanacho scored the only goal against Egypt on his AFCON debut and will fancy his channces of not only scoring against Sudan to equal Emenike’s feat but also end as the tournament’s top scorer.

Only three Nigerians have emerged as AFCON’s final tournamnet’s top scorer viz Segun Odegbami, Emenike and Odion Ighalo and Iheanacho will be keen to become the fourth.

Iheanacho has scored 12 times in 38 appearances for the Super Eagles since he made his debut in a goalless draw away at Swaziland in November 2015
