‘I’m Excited by This Project’: Leon Balogun Begins New Chapter with Hungarian Champions Győri ETO FC

Former Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun says he is eager to help build on the success of Hungarian champions Győri ETO FC after completing a one-year move to the club following the expiration of his contract with Cypriot side Aris Limassol.
“I am very happy to be a player of ETO FC because this is an extremely exciting project,” Balogun told the club’s official website.
“I think the team has already shown what it is capable of in the first few matches, but now it is important to define and maintain the right standards so we can continue building on last season’s success. I can’t wait to join the team and contribute my experience and strengths both on and off the pitch.”
The 38-year-old centre-back arrives in Hungary with an impressive résumé spanning some of Europe’s top leagues. Born in Berlin, Balogun made 75 Bundesliga appearances with Hannover 96, Werder Bremen and Mainz 05 before earning a move to the Premier League with Brighton in 2018, where he scored against Crystal Palace.
He later enjoyed a successful spell with Rangers, making 65 appearances and winning the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
Balogun spent the 2025/26 season with Aris Limassol, featuring in 22 matches while scoring two goals and providing one assist.
His arrival is expected to add leadership and valuable experience to the Győri ETO FC squad as the reigning Hungarian champions prepare to defend their domestic title and compete in Europe during the 2026/27 season.
