ISTAF Berlin 2022: Brume seeks first win in eight meetings vs Mihambo

Nigeria’s reigning Commonwealth Games champion and record holder in the long jump, Ese Brume will be seeking for her first win over reigning Olympic and World champion, home favourite Malaika Mihambo Sunday at the ISTAF 2022 meeting in Berlin, Germany.

The Nigerian played second fiddle to the German last July in Oregon at the 18th World Athletics Championships, winning the silver medal behind Mihambo.

Interestingly, the German has had the better of the 26 year old Nigerian in each of the three major global championships and Games where their paths crossed.

Mihambo came from almost exiting the event to win her first world title in 2019 with Brume placing third.

Last year at the delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo, the German was the victor again as the Nigerian settled for another bronze.

Interestingly, the two have met seven times with the German always ahead of the Nigerian even when both failed to makew it to the podium.

Their first ever clash was at the Rio 2016 Olympics where Mihambo jumped 6.95m to place fourth, one step ahead of Brume who jumped 6.81m to finish fifth in her debut at the Games.

The German won their next meeting at the Athletissima Diamond League meeting in Lausanne two years later before meeting for the third at the ISTAF 2018 in Berlin with the story unchanged.

Their last and seventh meeting was in Oregon where Mihambo jumped 7.12m to win the gold ahead of Brume who jumped 7.02m to finish in second place.

The Nigerian will be hoping for her first win to end her season while Mihambo will be aiming for a perfect tiune-up for the Diamond League final in Zurich later this week.
